Week 391: Questions for Life

I was at a talk while back, given by a man named Joel Fotinos.  During the talk, he mentioned three questions to ask ourselves, as a way to guide us into our best potential.  I was impressed by these three simple questions, and wanted to share them with you.  You might imagine that you ask them of your own deeper wisdom, of your "higher self", of the universe in general - of any source that you experience as wiser than your everyday consciousness.  Then, notice what you discover as the answers to these questions and allow the answers to become your practice for that week or month - however often you choose to seek the answers to these questions.

Here they are:

What do you want me to stop doing?
What do you want me to start doing?
What do you want me to keep doing?

You could also ask the questions this way:

What do I need to stop doing?
What do I need to start doing?
What do I need to keep doing?

A key element in asking these questions is to notice what drops in as a response, rather than thinking about them consciously.  The goal is to receive wisdom from non-conscious parts of your being, from wiser sources than your concrete, everyday awareness.  In hypnotic terms, you want answers from the "back of your mind" where the wisdom resides, rather than from the "front of your mind" where you only know what you already know.  That's really the art and skill of this kind of process - to get your conscious assumptions and beliefs out of the way so you can receive input from deeper sources in your being, from deeper parts of your consciousness.

As with all the experiments, I invite you to explore this one with open curiosity and notice what it brings into your life.  It's really important with this kind of process to ignore judgments you may have about what you think the answers might be to these questions.  Judgments limit us, and these questions are intended to open things up for you.  Also, please allow yourself to ignore self-criticism or doubts that may emerge and just notice what happens in your experience if you allow answers to drop in.

If you discover that the answers to these questions don't expand and support your empowerment, they may well be emerging from long-held negative beliefs about yourself or your life.  If that happens, allow yourself to become more aware of limiting beliefs that may affect your life and offer yourself some kind of healing process that will help soften or diminish the impact of these beliefs.  Also, take some time to settle in and ask your deeper wisdom for help in clearing away what gets in the way of receiving input that supports your empowerment and increased well-being.

You might begin your exploration with the above questions by making them your experiment for this week - by asking them on the first day and then noticing how you engage the answers for the rest of the week.  Remember, these experiments are intended to help you live more consciously in your daily life, to open up options and choices that support your optimal self-expression.  As you respond to the questions this week, notice what you experience in terms of the quality of your internal experience and the interactions you have with others as you move through your world.
